I have been working on a degree at an accredited college thank you very much previous poster. Web Design is about more than just making a pretty page and throwing it together. I taught myself a lot of that, but a college degree shows you the "theories" behind different types of designs. They also teach you a lot about color, font usage, marketing, design techniques, etc. I majored in Graphic Communications with an emphasis on web design - and I have learned a LOT that has strengthened me as a freelancer.

It also lends to your credibility. If someone has a kick butt portfolio along with an education - guess who is going to get the job first? That being said - your experience is definitely most important and a strong portfolio will make or break you. I worked a lot on a beginner's portfolio throughout college.

So yes "web design" is a "real degree" - some people are truly ignorant of what all is involved and should refrain from commenting. Dubious schools offer shady degrees in all types of fields.

Anyway, can you do it without? Yes..(see my link below for a lot of great free resources to use and learn from) but, I recommend at least a couple of years in college to learn some of the things that online tutorials and such can't teach you. College also offers the opportunity for networking and getting to know others who can help you get established after you graduate - either with a company or as a freelancer.

Keep in mind many companies who want to hire a "web designer" don't know the difference between that and a developer. My web design degree includes a lot of programming languages - which will also open many more doors than simply making things pretty ;). Knowing how to make them function is awesome too!

If someone were looking for a Web Designer, would you rather have someone with a degree or someone without?

Even if you freelance, people would rather have someone who can prove they know what they're doing that have to take someone's word for it.

welll, I may offend some folks, but "web design" isn't a "real" degree. It's offered at places like ITT Tech and Art Institute, Devry, etc. Those arent accredited institutitions so they can offer degrees in whatever they want. My university (University of Florida) has a major called "Digital Interactive Media" or something like that, this covers web design but that's also sort of an experimental major and likely isn't even offered at most other schools.

The reality is that web design is more focused on skillsets rather than a comphrehensive educational background, you will NEVER find an employer asking for a degree (if anything they may prefer or offer additional consideration to those with traditional B.S. in Computer Science or something if its web programmign focused)

Requirements instead will look like this:
3+ years HTML/CSS
2+ PHP
2+ javascript, jquery
2+ MySQL or equivalent
Ruby on Rails highly preferred

they will all look like this, so if you only wanted to do web design I'd focus on building a portfolio and job experience rather than a "web design" degree (at least as far as this particular field is concerned).

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and I have taught for various online schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

I don't have a 2010 stylebook on me, but as I understand it, website is one word and no longer capitalized, while Web as a stand-alone word is still capitalized.

a freelancer isnt somebody who just decides they can be an expert at something and then charges people.... a freelancer is mostly people who are qualified in there job and is not possible for them to work for a company on a full time basis.

i have family commitments which means i can not goto a regular 5 day a week job! freelancing means i can work from home and still look after my family. i have a degree in web design. without it id be subject to charging stupid prices that i couldnt live on, and customers like to see proof your capable of doing the work you say you can!

if your thinking of making wordpress websites then you wont need a degree....because youl probably only be changing colours of a pre made template....that might be fine if you want to earn some pocket money....but if you want to earn real money as a freelancer then you need to know what your doing to a professional level!
